Frequently asked questions
Why do you use temperature instead of colour images (NDVI)?
Temperature detects water stress BEFORE there is visible damage. When a plant closes its stomata for lack of water, the leaf temperature rises immediately, but it still looks green. NDVI only goes down when there is already damage - wilted or yellow leaves. With temperature we anticipate the problem by days or weeks.
Since what year do you have historical data?
From 2018 onwards, with daily data.
What is the spatial resolution?
10 meters x 10 meters per pixel.
Is rainfall data automatic?
Yes, they come from weather models. But you can upload your own rainfall data if you have rain gauges in the field, for accuracy. This is done from "Data Tools" → "Add Data"
Why is the critical moisture line (red) not straight?
Because critical humidity is dynamic - it varies depending on the stage of the crop, drought tolerance, atmospheric vapor pressure deficit and air temperature. A small crop with underdeveloped roots has a higher critical threshold. A mature crop with a deep root system can tolerate more drought.
Why do you sometimes recommend watering, even if there is no alert?
Because the system projects forward. The humidity may be fine today (without alert), but if they don't water tomorrow, in 2 days they will be under stress. Then he tells them: "water tomorrow" preventively.
How important is it to have the right type of soil?
VERY important. Soil moisture is calculated from water potential using texture-dependent pedotransfer functions. If the texture is poorly characterized, the humidity will have an error. If you have soil tests, use them. If not, at least put the approximate texture (sandy, loamy, clayey).
Is IrriWatch suitable for drip, sprinkler, gravity irrigation?
It works for any system. The platform measures water stress and water balance, regardless of the method of application. The recommendations are adapted to the system that you indicate in the field configuration.
Can I use IrriWatch for controlled deficit irrigation?
Yes. In fact, it's ideal because it allows you to see exactly how much stress you're applying and when. You can manage the crop between the recharge point and the critical level in a controlled way.
How do I differentiate if it is waterlogging stress or drought?
With the temperature of the plant: if there is prolonged waterlogging, the plant will be "cold", on the other hand if it is due to drought it will be "hot".
