Why use temperature data instead of NDVI to detect water stress?

Temperature data can detect water stress before visible crop damage occurs. When a plant closes its stomata due to a lack of water, leaf temperature rises even while the plant remains green; NDVI typically declines once damage, such as wilting or yellowing, is already visible. Thermal data can therefore identify signs of water stress days or weeks earlier.

Does IrriWatch work with different irrigation systems?

Yes. IrriWatch can be used with drip, sprinkler, and other irrigation systems. The platform measures water stress and water balance regardless of the application method, and recommendations are adapted based on the irrigation system selected in the field configuration.

How important is accurate soil type information?

Soil type is very important. Soil moisture is calculated using water potential and texture-dependent pedotransfer functions, so poorly characterized soil texture can introduce errors into soil moisture estimates. Use soil test results when available; otherwise, provide an approximate texture such as sandy, loamy, or clayey.

How far back is IrriWatch historical data?

From 2018 onwards, with daily data. 

What is the spatial resolution of Hydrosat’s thermal infrared data?

Hydrosat collects thermal infrared (TIR) data at a spatial resolution of 10 × 10 meters per pixel.
